The Public Health Team takes a lead on a number of Mental Health campaigns every year in Blackburn with Darwen in order:
- To improve knowledge, skills and attitudes relating to mental health and suicide prevention.
- To enhance understanding of mental health problems and how it can impact on individuals and society.
- To develop skill, motivation, knowledge and confidence in offering help to those with symptoms of mental illness/mental health problems.
- Building community capacity to provide people with the knowledge to guide others towards appropriate professional help.
- To improved outcomes for those in distress
- To reduce the risk of serious self-harm and suicide
Our main campaigns are:
World Suicide Prevention Day
Each year has a different theme and focus, to bring to light a specific aspect of suicide prevention.
What is it?
Every year organisations and communities around the world come together to raise awareness of how we can create a world where fewer people die by suicide.
When is it?
World Suicide Prevention Suicide Day is always on 10th September.
Why is it important?
In 2018, in the UK and Republic of Ireland, more than 6,800 people died of suicide. Every life lost to suicide is a tragedy. (Taken from World Suicide Prevention Day | Samaritans )
World Mental Health Day
What is it?
The overall objective of World Mental Health Day is to raise awareness of mental health issues around the world and to mobilize efforts in support of mental health. Each year a theme is set by the World Federation for Mental Health.
When is it?
World Mental Health Day is always on 10th October
Why is it important?
The Day provides an opportunity for all stakeholders working on mental health issues to talk about their work, and what more needs to be done to make mental health care a reality for people worldwide.
