When John was diagnosed with Idiopathic Pulmonary Fibrosis, a condition that affects the lungs’ ability to absorb oxygen and release carbon dioxide, he was given the daunting news that he might only have five years left to live. As a dog owner, he’d always led an active lifestyle and enjoyed long walks over the moors. John was determined not to let his condition hold him back.

Although his condition gradually worsened, leaving him struggling to breathe and reliant on an oxygen tank, John refused to let his quality of life deteriorate completely. He still went on walks albeit shorter and less strenuous, with the support from his daughter. In August 2023, he underwent a life-changing lung transplant, providing him with a renewed sense of hope.

HOW JOHN MOVES MORE

Following his surgery, John was referred to the Refresh Team, where he joined a rehabilitation programme tailored to those with similar conditions. After completing this programme, John now attends gym sessions twice a week, and he takes pride in supporting others who are just beginning their physical activity journey.

Unable to drive for six months post-operation, John relied on walking more and gradually he regained his strength and stamina. While some days are better than others, he now manages to hike over the hills and up to Darwen Tower, averaging an impressive 5,500 steps per day.

John credits the gym, the Refresh Team, and his friends and family for their unwavering support throughout his journey. He firmly believes that without them, he wouldn’t be alive today.
