Contraception

Where can I get emergency contraception?

If you’ve had vaginal sex without using a condom, or the contraceptive has method failed (i.e., you missed a pill, or a condom split) you may be able to prevent pregnancy by using emergency contraception or LARC (long acting reversible contraception) within the first five days.

The sooner you access emergency contraception, the more effective it will be.

Need more information about emergency contraception and how it works, watch this video produced by Brook.

There are two types of emergency contraception:

  • the emergency hormonal contraception (sometimes called the morning after pill or emergency contraceptive pill)
  • the IUD (intrauterine device – also known as the non-hormonal coil) this would need to be fitted at Brook.

Emergency contraception is most effective if you take it as early as possible.

Emergency hormonal contraception is available from

  • Brook at their in-person clinic
  • If you are 16 or over, you can order online from SH:24 and receive it directly to your home or another location of your choice.
  • Local pharmacies
  • If you are under 16, and need to talk about emergency contraception, please contact Brook Blackburn as soon as possible on 01254 268 700.

We are here to help.

Long-Acting Reversible Contraception: The Implant or COIL?

Do you want a contraception that is long acting, fuss free and 99% reliable? LARC might be your answer.

LARC stands for Long-Acting Reversible Contraception and provides protection from pregnancy for between 3 – 5 years, depending on the type chosen. There are several methods, the main types are the non-hormonal copper coil (IUD), the hormonal coil (the IUS), the contraceptive injection and the hormonal implant.

LARC methods are reversible. Once removed, fertility typically returns quickly, allowing individuals to conceive if they wish to start a family.

Benefits of long-acting contraception

  • It’s 99% effective.
  • You don’t have to remember to take it on a daily basis.
  • It’s discrete.
  • Once removed fertility soon returns.
  • It can be fitted at Brook or at a gp.

Book your appointment at Brook by calling 01254268700

Menopause

Menopause

Menopause marks the ending of menstrual periods due to declining hormone levels, typically occurring in women aged 45 to 55, though it can occur earlier. It affects individuals who menstruate. Menopause can happen naturally, or for reasons such as surgery to remove the ovaries (oophorectomy) or the uterus (hysterectomy), cancer treatments like chemotherapy, or a genetic reason. Sometimes the reason is unknown.

Perimenopause is when you have symptoms of menopause, but your periods have not stopped. Perimenopause ends and you reach menopause when you have not had a period for 12 months.

Menopause and perimenopause can induce symptoms like anxiety, mood swings, cognitive difficulties, hot flashes, and irregular periods. These symptoms may start years before menstruation stops and continue afterward, impacting various aspects of life including relationships and work.

There are interventions available to alleviate symptoms, including lifestyle adjustments and hormone replacement therapy. Medications can help replenish diminished hormones and alleviate associated symptoms.
