No person should go hungry in the community. Help is available throughout Blackburn with Darwen to keep you and your family healthy and fed.

The BwD Food Resilience Alliance and partner organisations aim to tackle food poverty, provide food and support for those in crisis or significant poverty – food banks, community kitchens, holiday clubs, benefit and financial advice.

Foodbanks

Blackburn Foodbank

Blackburn Foodbank aim to reduce and hunger and poverty within the borough and can provide three days worth of nutritionally balanced meals for those who are referred in crisis. They are also partnered with the The Oaks Money Advice Centre which is open to anyone under financial strain. Their address is Oakenhurst Road, Blackburn, BB2 1SN and they are open Monday, Wednesday and Friday between 10am and 2pm.

Darwen Food Larder

Darwen Food Larder have a click/call and collect service for emergency food parcels. Their collection point is Meeting Places, Croft St, BB3 1BG, and are open between 12pm and 2pm every working day.

Blackburn with Darwen Community Centre Food Parcels

Community centres across the borough are providing food & essentials bags for any families or individuals who may be struggling with the lasting impacts of COVID.

The centres include: Ivy St, Greenfields, Accrington Road, Little Harwood, Mill Hill and Darwen Valley Community Centre.

Free School Meals

Children can receive free school meals if their parents receive:

  • Income Support (IS)
  • Income Based Jobseekers Allowance
  • An income-related employment and support allowance
  • The Guarantee element of State Pension Credit (PCGC) support under part VI of the Immigration and Asylum Act 1999
  • Child Tax Credit, provided they are not entitled to Working Tax Credit and have an annual income, as assessed by Inland Revenue that does not exceed £16,190
  • Universal Credit and have an income, as assessed by the Inland Revenue that does not exceed £7,400
